Bull bars and nudge bars take relentless punishment — gravel roads, scrub, UV exposure, salt air on coastal drives, and the general wear that comes with actually using your 4WD. Factory finishes (typically basic wet paint or a light powder from the original manufacturer) chip, fade, and corrode faster than most owners expect.
A quality powder coat from Coating Lab gives your bar a finish that's purpose-built to last in New Zealand conditions:
- Stone chip and scratch resistance far beyond what wet paint can offer
- UV stability to keep colour consistent under New Zealand's harsh sun
- Salt and corrosion protection for coastal driving or beach access tracks
- Colour match to your vehicle or a custom finish that sets your build apart
- Long-term durability that holds up to real off-road use, not just show
What We Coat
We coat all styles and types of bull bars and nudge bars — whether it's a budget bar or a high-end competition unit:
- Full loop bull bars (ARB, AFN, MCC, RIVAL, and all other brands)
- Nudge bars and bumper guards
- Sahara-style tube bars and side steps
- Commercial and stock-grade push bars
- Winch bars and winch cradles
- Rock sliders and side rails
- Bash plates and underbody protection
We coat the bar, not the vehicle. Bring us the part off the car and we'll handle the rest. If you're after powder coating for ute accessories like toolboxes and trays, we do those too — or see our full range of powder coating services.
The Process
Every bull bar we coat goes through the same proven process to ensure the finish bonds properly and lasts:
- Strip: Old paint or coating is fully removed via sandblasting to bare metal — no shortcuts here, adhesion depends on it
- Chemical pre-treatment: The bare metal is treated to remove any remaining contaminants and prepare the surface for bonding
- Powder application: The powder is applied electrostatically, ensuring even coverage including complex curves, tubes, and recesses
- Oven cure: The bar goes into our curing oven where the powder melts and flows into a hard, uniform film
- Quality check: We inspect the finished coating for even coverage, adhesion, and finish quality before it leaves the shop
Colour Options
Satin black is by far the most popular choice for bull bars — it suits most vehicle trim, hides minor scuffs, and ages well. But we're not a one-colour shop:
- Satin black — the go-to for most 4WD builds, practical and timeless
- Gloss black — a cleaner, more polished look for show or street builds
- Textured black (hammer finish) — adds grip texture and disguises minor contact marks
- Colour match to your vehicle — we'll work from your colour code to blend the bar into the bodywork
- Custom RAL colours — any colour from the RAL range if you want something unique

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. We can colour match to your vehicle's existing finish using RAL codes, Resene, or Dulux colour references. Bring your vehicle in or provide the colour code and we'll work from there.
Turnaround depends on the size of the job, colour availability, and current workload. Get in touch for a quote and we'll give you a realistic timeframe at that point.
Yes. Old paint or coating must be fully removed before we apply a new powder coat. We use sandblasting to strip back to bare metal, which also creates the ideal surface profile for adhesion. Powder coated over an existing coating will fail.
Aluminium bull bars take powder coating very well with proper pretreatment. Stainless steel is less common for powder coating since stainless is typically chosen for its natural finish — but contact us to discuss your specific bar and we can advise.
Yes, the bull bar needs to be removed and brought in to us. Powder coating involves sandblasting and an oven cure — the whole item goes through the process and needs to be separated from the vehicle for both steps.
Significantly more durable. Powder coating is harder, more flexible, and more resistant to stone chips, UV fading, and corrosion than wet paint. For an item that takes as much punishment as a bull bar, the difference is meaningful — especially in New Zealand's coastal and off-road conditions.
