What Are Barge Flashings?

A barge flashing is a formed metal profile that runs along the rake — the sloped edge — of a pitched roof at the gable end. It caps the exposed roof edge, protects the timber rake board (barge board) underneath, and stops wind-driven rain from getting beneath the roofing sheets. Without a properly fitted barge flashing, water tracks along the roof edge, rots the barge board, and damages framing and wall cladding below.

The profile wraps over the top of the last roofing sheet and folds down to cover the face of the barge board. The exact shape depends on the roofing system — corrugated, tray, or standing seam — and the overhang depth required. On homes, barge flashings are one of the most visible parts of the roofline, so the finish matters as much as the fit.

At Coating Lab in Auckland, we manufacture custom barge flashings to order. You give us the dimensions and profile, we fold and finish them to suit your roof.

Materials

We fold barge flashings from a range of sheet metals to suit the application:

  • Colorsteel — pre-painted steel in standard roofing colours. If the colour you need is available in the Colorsteel range, this is the simplest option — no additional coating required.
  • Zincalume — zinc/aluminium alloy-coated steel. A durable, unpainted substrate that can be left as-is or powder coated to a specific colour.
  • Aluminium — lightweight and naturally corrosion resistant. An excellent base for powder coating, particularly in coastal environments where steel substrates may be less suitable.
  • Galvanised steel — traditional zinc-coated steel. Reliable and widely used across residential and commercial roofing.

Colour Matching to Existing Roofing

Most barge flashing orders need to match an existing roof colour. We handle this two ways:

  • Colorsteel colour match — if your roof is a standard Colorsteel colour (Karaka, Ironsand, Ebony, Grey Friars, Gull Grey, and so on), we can fold your barge flashings directly from Colorsteel sheet in the same colour. The finish matches out of the box.
  • Custom powder coat — if the colour is non-standard, discontinued, or you want to match a specific swatch, we powder coat the flashings to any colour. We match to RAL codes, Resene references, Dulux references, or a physical sample you bring in.

Powder coating also gives you the option of a different finish texture — gloss, satin, or matt — useful when you want barge flashings to complement rather than exactly replicate the roofing colour.

Custom Barge Flashing Bending and Folding

Every barge flashing we make is folded to your specific profile. There is no standard off-the-shelf shape — the dimensions depend on your roof pitch, roofing profile, barge board depth, and overhang. Whether you need a barge flashing for a corrugated roof, tray profile, or standing seam system, we fold barge flashing profiles on our press brake to the measurements you supply.

Provide a sketch or drawing with your key dimensions and we will fold to suit. If you have a sample piece from an existing roof, bring it in and we will replicate the profile. We handle single pieces through to full runs for new builds and re-roofs.

Need other custom flashings at the same time? We can fold ridge cappings, apron flashings, and any other roof flashings as part of the same order.

How to Order

The process for ordering custom barge flashings is straightforward:

  1. Send your sketch or drawing — include the profile shape, key dimensions (face height, top return, overhang depth), and the length of each piece.
  2. Choose your material and colour — Colorsteel, Zincalume, aluminium, or galvanised steel. If you need powder coating, specify the colour reference or send a sample.
  3. We manufacture — your barge flashings are folded and finished (coated if required) at our Onehunga workshop.
  4. Collection or delivery — pick up from 55 Angle Street, Onehunga, or we can arrange delivery across Auckland.

For Roofers and Trade Customers

We supply barge flashings to roofing companies and trade customers across Auckland. If you are running multiple jobs, we maintain consistent quality and colour across runs so your flashings match from one site to the next.

We also handle the rest of the flashing package — ridge cappings, valleys, aprons, and drip edges — so you can source everything from one shop. For an overview of where each flashing type fits, see our guide to flashings in NZ.

Frequently Asked Questions

A fascia runs horizontally at the eave (bottom) of a roof and supports the guttering. A barge flashing runs diagonally along the rake (sloped edge) at the gable end, covering the exposed edge of the roofing and protecting the barge board beneath it from water.

Yes. We manufacture barge flashings to your specific dimensions and can match the profile to your existing or new roofing. Bring a sample or provide a drawing and we will fold to suit.

Galvanised steel, aluminium, and Colorsteel are all commonly used for barge flashings. If you want a colour-matched finish, we recommend aluminium with powder coating, or Colorsteel if the colour matches a standard pre-painted option. Stainless steel is also available for high-corrosion environments.

Barge flashings are typically fixed through the top face into the barge board or rafter end, with fixings concealed under the roofing sheet overlap. We manufacture flashings to the specified dimensions — fixing method is the installer's responsibility.

Yes. We powder coat barge flashings to any colour — RAL, Resene, Dulux, Colorsteel colour names, or custom match from a sample. Contact us for a quote.

Yes. Barge flashings for corrugated roofs are one of our most common orders. The profile is folded to wrap over the top of the corrugated roofing sheet at the gable edge and down the face of the barge board. We manufacture barge flashings for all corrugated iron profiles used in New Zealand. Provide your corrugated profile type, barge board depth, and overhang dimension and we will fold to suit.
