What Are Roof Flashings?

Roof flashings are formed sheet metal components installed at every junction, penetration, and edge on a roof. Wherever two surfaces meet — a roof plane and a wall, a roof edge and the sky, a pipe and a roofing sheet — water will try to find its way in. Flashings are the purpose-made metal barriers that prevent this.

They are not a single product but a family: apron flashings at wall junctions, barge flashings at gable ends, ridge cappings at the apex, valley flashings at intersecting planes, and more. Each type is shaped to suit its location and must be fitted and sealed correctly to maintain weathertightness.
