Coating Lab is a sheet metal and general fabrication workshop in Onehunga, Auckland. We make metal parts and assemblies to order — from a single bracket to a repeat run of panels — working directly from your drawings, sketches or a sample. If it can be cut, folded, joined and finished, our team can fabricate it.
Our focus is custom metal fabrication for trade, commercial and architectural clients. That means the awkward, specified and one-off work that off-the-shelf suppliers cannot handle: the enclosure that has to fit a particular space, the architectural feature drawn by a designer, the structural component detailed on a set of plans. We fabricate to the drawing, not to a catalogue.
What sets us apart is what happens after fabrication. Because we run press brake folding and powder coating in the same workshop, your parts can be fabricated, folded and finished by one team, with surface preparation arranged as required. One supplier, one point of contact, one job.
What We Fabricate
Our sheet metal and steel fabrication work covers a broad range of products and components. Typical outputs include:
- Brackets — mounting brackets, support brackets, fixing plates and connection details for structural and services work
- Frames — steel and stainless frames, sub-frames and framework for equipment, joinery and architectural elements
- Panels — wall panels, fascia panels, infill panels and folded sheet-metal panels made to size
- Enclosures — cabinets, housings, covers and protective enclosures for plant and equipment
- Architectural metalwork — louvres, screens, copings, sills, feature panels and bespoke details for commercial and residential projects
- Structural components — folded sections, cleats, plates and fabricated members made to your engineering details
These are the outputs we build day to day. If your part sits outside this list, send us the drawing anyway — most sheet metal and light steel fabrication is within our scope, and we will tell you honestly if it is not.
Materials We Work With
We fabricate in the metals used across construction, engineering and architectural work in New Zealand:
- Mild steel — the workhorse for brackets, frames, structural components and general fabrication
- Stainless steel — for food-grade, marine, hygienic and corrosion-resistant applications
- Aluminium — lightweight fabrication for architectural features, signage and shopfitting
- Colorsteel — pre-painted steel for building envelope components and colour-matched details
- Zincalume — for roofing and building components where a bare metallic finish suits
- Galvsteel — galvanised steel where added corrosion protection is needed before coating
We can fabricate from material you supply or source stock on your behalf. If you are not sure which material suits the application or environment, talk to us — we can advise based on the end use, exposure and finish you need.
From Drawing to Finished Part
Most fabrication jobs start with a drawing, but they do not have to. Our team can work from a full CAD file, a marked-up plan, a hand sketch with dimensions, or an existing sample you want reproduced. Whatever you have, send it through and we will turn it into a quote and then a part.
A typical job runs like this:
- Send your details — drawings, a CAD file, a sketch or a sample, along with material, quantity and any tolerances that matter
- We quote — we price the fabrication, folding and any coating as one package so there are no surprises later
- We fabricate — parts are cut, folded and joined to your specification, with tight tolerances where the job calls for it
- We finish — parts move straight to powder coating in-house, with blasting arranged as required
- You collect or we arrange delivery — finished, coated parts ready to install or fit off
Because there is no minimum order, this process works just as well for a single replacement part as it does for an ongoing production run.
Fabricate and Finish With One Team
Most fabricated metal needs a protective or decorative finish. Usually that means coordinating a fabricator, a blaster and a coater — three separate businesses, three lots of transport, three invoices, and plenty of chances for delays or handling damage along the way.
At Coating Lab you deal with one team. Fabrication and folding happen here, powder coating happens here, and blasting is arranged as part of your job when it is needed. Your parts go from fabrication straight onto the coating line while they are still clean and undamaged, which means a better finish, less double-handling and a single point of contact for the whole job.
This integrated approach is particularly valuable on architectural metalwork, custom flashings, cladding and building components where the finished surface is on show and the schedule is tight.
For Trade, Commercial & Architectural Projects
We are set up for the bigger and repeat work that commercial builders, fabricators, roofers and specifiers need. If your own workshop is at capacity, if a job exceeds your machine's capability, or if you want fabrication and finishing handled in one place, we are here to help.
For commercial and architect-specified projects, that means:
- One purchase order covering fabrication, folding and coating instead of chasing several suppliers
- One point of contact from quote through to finished, coated parts
- Repeat runs made consistently to the same specification across a project
- Drawing-driven work — we fabricate to your details, not to a fixed catalogue
We work regularly with fabricators and on architectural projects across Auckland. If you order regularly, ask us about setting up a trade account so pricing, POs and job intake run smoothly.
Auckland-Wide From Our Onehunga Workshop
Our workshop is at 55 Angle Street, Onehunga, central to the Auckland isthmus and easy to reach from the CBD, the airport corridor, South Auckland and the eastern suburbs. From here we fabricate and finish work for clients right across the region.
Drop off drawings or a sample in person, or send them through online — either way you deal with the same team from first enquiry to finished part. Related services worth a look are our custom flashings, metal cladding and box gutters, fascia & spouting, all folded and finished in the same workshop.

We fabricate brackets, frames, panels, enclosures, architectural metalwork and structural components from mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium and pre-finished steel. We work from drawings, sketches or a sample, and handle one-off parts through to repeat production runs.
Yes. Folding and powder coating are handled in-house and blasting is arranged as required, so you deal with one point of contact from flat sheet to finished, coated part. There is no shuttling of work between separate shops.
Yes. We work with builders, fabricators, specifiers and architects on larger commercial and architectural jobs, including repeat runs against a single purchase order. Send your drawings or schedule and we will quote it.
Drawings or a CAD file are ideal, but dimensioned sketches or a sample part work well too. Let us know the material and thickness, quantities, any tolerances that matter, and whether you need a coated finish.
