A motorcycle project deserves a finish that does it justice. Whether you're restoring a classic, building a custom from scratch, or refreshing a daily rider, powder coating delivers a level of quality and durability that rattle-can paint simply can't match.
At Coating Lab, we work with motorcycle builders, restorers, clubs, and enthusiasts throughout Auckland. We understand what a project bike means to its owner, and we take the care that reflects that.

Frame Restoration & Custom Builds
The frame is the foundation of any motorcycle build, and its finish sets the tone for everything around it. We coat complete motorcycle frames, including tight internal tubes and complex junction points where spray paint struggles to provide even coverage. Powder coating's electrostatic application ensures full, consistent coverage across the entire frame.
For restorations, we can match original factory colours or period-correct options. For custom builds, the full colour range is open — matte black café racer style, bright custom colours, two-tones, and everything in between.

Club Projects & Group Orders
If your club or riding group has a batch of frames, wheels, or components to coat in a consistent colour, get in touch to discuss your requirements. We work with motorcycle clubs and can discuss scheduling around your project timelines.
Colour & Finish Options for Motorcycles
Our most popular motorcycle finishes include:
- Gloss black — a classic for frames, forks, and visible components
- Satin or matte black — modern custom aesthetic, hides minor marks better
- Wrinkle/textured finishes — popular for engine covers and engine bay components
- Metallic and silver tones — for period-correct restorations
- Custom colours — full RAL range for one-of-a-kind builds
- Clear coat — over polished or bare aluminium components
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, we regularly coat complete motorcycle frames. The frame needs to be fully stripped of all components, wiring, fittings, and rubber parts before coating. We handle the surface preparation and sandblasting as part of our process. Talk to us at the assessment stage and we'll confirm exactly what prep is needed for your frame.
Gloss black and satin black are classics for frames — they look sharp and suit most bike styles. Wrinkle finishes are great for engine covers and cases, hiding minor surface imperfections while adding visual texture. For wheels and show parts, custom colours and metallics are popular. We're happy to advise based on the look you're going for.
Yes — the frame needs to be fully stripped of all parts before we can coat it. That means engine out, wiring removed, all fittings and bearings out, and all rubber bushings removed. We handle the stripping of existing paint and the sandblasting. Arriving well-stripped makes for a faster turnaround and ensures the best result.
Absolutely. We offer the full RAL colour range plus custom matching. Whether you want a classic period-correct colour for a restoration or a completely unique shade for your custom build, we can accommodate it. Bring in a colour chip or code, or come in and look through our swatch book.
